Getting braces on is a bittersweet moment. Not many people look forward to metal brackets and wires on their teeth for at least a year, but they do want the beautiful smile braces produce.

However, when people get braces they’re often not prepared for the amount of work required to properly clean around their new braces. This is why we here at Nyberg Orthodontics recommend you follow a strict daily oral hygiene routine.

You might want to try using interdental brushes or a floss threader with wax coated floss, if you have trouble cleaning around the braces or working floss between your teeth.

It’s a good idea to try to avoid eating sticky foods and chewing gum and eating sticky foods can bend wires, loosen brackets or dislodge spacers. Your braces can also be damaged by biting down repeatedly on hard and crunchy foods. Bad habits like chewing on hard objects, pencils, pens and ice can also cause damage to your braces.

If you do have something break of come bracket loose, you can secure it in the special orthodontic wax you were given when you were first fitted for braces. This will help to protect your mouth until you can get in to Nyberg Orthodontics for an appointment to repair the damage.

It’s important to maintain your daily oral hygiene routine of brushing and flossing twice each day. If you have trouble cleaning around the braces or flossing the spaces between your teeth, you might want to try using interdental brushes or a floss threader with wax coated floss.
