Orthodontic treatment can take some time and it can be rather costly, which is why it’s important to do all you can to take good care of your smile and braces during treatment so you don’t delay your treatment time and you avoid annoying and troublesome issues.

To help you keep your teeth, gums, and appliance in the best shape possible, our Miller-Nyberg Orthodontics dental team has some tips and information that can keep you on the right track.

First, keep your smile and appliance clean by keeping up on oral hygiene. Do your best to brush at least twice a day and floss once a day. For even better results, brush and floss your teeth after each meal and snack. Doing these things can help you remove the stuck plaque and food particles in your braces that can encourage tooth decay, enamel stains, and gum disease. So, make sure you clean your smile regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, and a floss product of your choice. To make things easier, keep these things with you throughout the day so you can brush and floss when needed.

Second, avoid eating the foods that can harm your teeth and appliance. The foods to avoid include starchy, sticky, chewy, and sugary foods because they can create cavities and can also break the brackets and wires on your braces. So, please do your best to avoid eating these products.

Third, wear a mouthguard when you play high-contact sports and activities. These appliances are very beneficial because they can protect your teeth and braces from any hard, forceful object that hits them, reducing your chances of knocking out a tooth, injuring your tongue, or breaking your braces. So, do your best to wear a mouthguard while you are active.
